I am an active member of AIGA Chicago, a non-profit serving the local design community, for a few years now. I decided to join the board after I was involved with the mentorship program the year previously. I wanted a bigger leadership role within the organization. I'm currently involved with a few programs and events including this flagship event. I typically help out on the day of Ask + Give. Yet I decided in June 2023 to create the event's program too.
This event was held at the Design Musuem of Chicago. I felt urgency to be ambitious because of its location and the other designers there. The scrutiny on this design isn't normal. I wanted universal approval and praise from my equals. The pressue was on! I definitely felt it once problems naturally began to happen. The first draft included a big mishap: the inside content would be cutoff in the paper publication. This new formatting led to better design outcomes from creation of a vertical banner on the speakers page to a completely new layout for the designer showcase and upcoming events pages. The other problem, I had to find a local printer to print these booklets because of its unusual 9 in x 6 in dimensions.
The result a near perfect end product. I received high praise from every attendee! This project validated my career and my future in design and its community. Extremely satisfying!
