My first project with Orek Games, which the developer and I created a mobile gaming app that intended to reach a large audience, all ages. Our intention was Pizza Pirate to have a gameplay that was similar to everyone too. The objective: players match pizza toppings to pizza orders in limited time. Thus, quicker you can match toppings to the shown order the more points you will score. The more points you score turns into gold doubloons (it is pirate theme after all). The doubloons then turned into game rewards (extra time, toppings double-sized, etc). A mobile game that can be played by anyone, anytime, and anywhere.
The game included 15 pizza toppings that ranged from pepperoni to anchovies. The game's objective played a significant role in how I illustrated each topping. You will not find an Italian sausage as a link on an actual pizza, however we wanted different shapes and sizes in the game to challenge the gamer's eyesight and quickness. Also, I found ground sausage wasn't effective as a two-dimensional illustration.
However, the name is the standout of this project because it also led directly to the game's nemesis, Captain Slice. Of couse a pirate captain whose name is inspired by pizza must have a pizza cutter hand instead of a hook. Of course, I ensure to make it a center piece throughout the game's web banner and app icon. Pizza Pirate no longer sails on the Google Play store, yet it did find some success when available: at least over 100 downloads in an over-saturated app market.
